International Women in Engineering Day

June 23^rd 2017 marks International Women in Engineering Day – a day to celebrate the contribution of women to the industry and encourage young girls to consider a future career in engineering. According to the Office of National Statistics, women only make up roughly 8% of engineers, displaying how important it is to have days like this.

Without women in engineering, we would be missing out on many advancements in the engineering industry that have helped to bring the sector to where it is today. From Emily Roebling to Stephanie Kwolek, women have played a huge role in engineering.

Today, women are being looked to, to bridge the gap in skills that the UK is currently experiencing. This is particularly important at the moment while there is still so much uncertainty, largely in the political world. As we prepare to split with the EU, many companies and sectors are preparing to face the consequences. This means that the industry within the UK will have to start investing more in the talent on home soil.

It is clear that there is still a long way to go to ensure that women are on equal footing within the engineering industry, but initiatives such as International Women in Engineering Day can help to show young girls that their contribution will be valued, highlighting the career options they have.
