A material is considered to be carbon steel when itโs an alloy of carbon and iron โ and has no minimum content required for other elements, such as manganese, vanadium, nickel or copper.
Typically, this alloy has less than 2% carbon in its composition, varying usually between 0.1% and 0.9%.

Carbon steel casting is an extremely popular option, as it has a vast range of applications in several different industries. Due to its ferromagnetic properties, this material is particularly useful for motor and electrical appliances. Carbon steel is safe and durable and has a high level of structural integrity, features that add to its popularity and make it one of the most created alloys in the world.
This alloy has a composition of 0.05%-0.25% carbon content, making itย softer and more malleableย than other types;ย carburising can increase hardnessย if necessary. Low carbon steels offer a range of tensile properties via heat treatment and can be hardened to giveย high surface hardnessย withย abrasion resistanceย and goodย core ductility.
This is more commonlyย used in the form of engineering steelsย for low and medium-strength applications, likeย brackets, casings and links.

The carbon content in this alloy ranges from approximately 0.29% to 0.54%. This composition allows it to be moreย durable, pliable, and strong. A range of tensile strengths is possible withย good ductilityย andย shock resistance, readily machined in the softened condition.
This carbon steel alloy is most used whereย ductility, good shock and fatigue strengthsย are required, such as withย levers, air-frame parts and hydraulic machinery.

With 0.55-0.95% carbon content, high carbon steel isย strongย and hasย a good shape memory, making it a particularlyย useful option for spring manufacturers. This alloy steel for high tensile applicationsย withstands wear and abrasionย and is suitable forย heavy-duty applicationsย as well, such asย cranks and pins.
